Natural High

image

These last few days have been hectic, so my husband and I got away this weekend.  Away from the people.  Away from the noise. On Saturday, we ventured about 30 minutes north of home to Guadalupe State Park.  The temperature was in the 50s.  When we stepped out of the car, the crisp air filled my lungs and I was overwhelmed with a sense of calm I hadn’t felt in a long time.  There were only 3-4 other small groups of people in the whole area.  We meandered by the river.  I tried to skip rocks like I did when I was a kid, but it seems that skill is long gone.  My husband was amused at my repeated failures.

Maidenhair Fern – beautiful black stems

After our exploring, we headed into the nearby town for lunch.  We had been to this restaurant once before for dinner and it was a hit.  They did not disappoint this time either!

I had a Dungeoness crab salad with crispy raviolis filled with sweet potatoes.  My husband had a grilled salmon sandwich with avocado.

Dessert? Yes please!

For dessert, I had my very first Creme Brulee.  It was vanilla bean.  Creme Brulee, where have you been all my life?!

Sunday Trail Run

Today, we wanted to continue the theme of getting away from it all – and we wanted to run.  So we headed to nearby Government Canyon State Natural Area.  As we arrived and the cool wind washed over me, again I was overwhelmed with a sense of calm.  This was going to be a good run.  These trails are very rocky in places.  You have to really plan each step, “choose your line,” and lift your feet – no dragging, no shuffling – unless you want to break an ankle or land on your face.  We planned to run 3 or 4 miles.  At about mile 3, we came to a magical area where Spanish moss was hanging from all of the towering trees.  It literally stopped us in our tracks.

imageWe started running again and came to an old structure that is protected by a fence.  A beautiful old stone house.  It was boarded up and there was no informational signs, so I don’t know the story behind it.

imageBefore we knew it, we had run 6 miles.  I could never have run that far in our boring neighborhood.  I need something to look at!  It helps to be distracted by natural beauty.  Now I feel ready to face the week ahead.
